While researching on trends for alternative
sources of energy I found this interesting article in: FORBES. Ebay's goal is to source at least
8 percent of their demand for energy from cleaner sources by 2015. At one of
their core data centers located in Utah 75% of the required energy is generated by Bloom Fuel Cells that use natural gas. This has not only contributed to
their cleaner energy goal but also in decreasing the risk of downtime for an important
component of their commerce infrastructure. Vlad
To get this deal done, Ebay first had to convince Utah to pass new legislation that allows non-utility energy consumers to buy and transmit power directly from energy developers. Once that became the new law, Ebay signed a deal with Ormat Technologies. Ormat capture's waste heat that would otherwise be released to the atmosphere and converts that heat into energy using an Energy Converter, similar to those used in geothermal electricity generation. They now have a 20 year contract with Ebay.
