This article seems to confirm the graph that we saw in class (slide 45 in today's deck). While Statcounter is one of their sources, they cite several additional sources. The only new insight here is that Bing and Facebook's increased presence in the US leads to a lower market share for Google. This is actually opposite of what was suggested in class (i.e. Google's international share would be lower due to their lack of traffic in China).
Bing has been marketing aggressively in the US in an attempt to gain market share. Microsoft is spending significant advertising dollars on awareness ads as well as pointed comparative ads (e.g. "Scroogled" campaign - www.scroogled.com).
It will be interesting to follow these trends both domestically and internationally as everyone chases Google's more than $40 billion in advertising revenue.
